Folarin Agbaje and Kelechi Isaac Nwaogwugwu, artist at Comic Republic

Folarin served as Diversity Director and on the comics library board from when the library was first founded in 2018 until he passed away on May 16th, 2024. Folarin was a graduate of the University of Toronto with a Master of Information in Library and Information Science, a BA in Communication Studies, and went on to work at Oakville Public Library. Folarin was passionate about comics and their accessibility and was instrumental in bringing Nigerian comics to our community in Toronto. Those that were lucky enough to know Folarin, know what a kind, open, and funny person he was. Completely unabashed about the things that brought him joy. He wanted others to be able to be who they are in the world without fear.

If you knew Folarin and would like to add remarks to his memorial wall, you can do so over here.

We are in the process of putting together a collection of African comics named in his honour. We will miss him deeply.

To find these comics in our online catalogue, visit our catalogue page over here, and in the search bar type in “Folarin Agbaje”.

I will also be updating this page with new titles added as this collection grows.
